I've found that giving mortgage professionals a real "taste" of what coaching is like is the best way to identify the people who will benefit most from it. At the end of your session, you'll be given the option of scheduling additional coaching, but there will be absolutely no sales pressure of any kind.
I am often asked about how my coaching services work. Every coaching relationship is unique, because every coaching client has unique talents, goals and objectives; every client has different reasons for hiring a coach. With that in mind, the following information will give you an idea of my philosophical approach to the mortgage origination business, how I structure my coaching services, as well as what a client receives in the coaching experience.
A Superior Product
No one ever improved their circumstances or their performance without first having a clear picture of what they wanted to accomplish. The business strategies and systems I develop for my clients are designed to enable you to reach your income goals consistently – month in and month out – regardless of market conditions or where the industry is in its business cycle. There’s only one way to do that, and it starts with having a clearly superior product – something that is much better than anything your competitors are offering. (By product, I mean the complete package of services you offer the consumer, which includes, but is by no means limited to, your loan product.)
Why do you need a clearly superior product? Because when the mortgage business cycle approaches its low point, where demand is relatively low, you have roughly the same number of competitors chasing after a smaller number of customers. Unless you can offer them something better than what your competitors are offering, you will end up getting in line with everybody else to get a smaller piece of that smaller pie.
That’s why you need a superior product -- so you can make it easy for prospects to see that they’re much better off working with you than they would be with any of your competitors.
There are two ways to approach the job of marketing yourself:
- You can think “inside the box,” which means you offer the same services your competitors offer, but you try to do it better or cheaper or faster.
- You can think “outside the box,” which means you ask yourself:
What do prospective homebuyers – for example -- really want, that they’re not getting now, that you might find a way to provide? What could you offer them that would be so valuable it would permanently tip the scales toward you and make them customers for life?
Measurement: The Difference Between Amateurs & Pros
Your loan origination business can be compared to a manufacturing assembly line, where the finished product is a closed loan. There are 6 critical stages in your loan assembly line:
Leads Generated
Calls (Contacts) Completed
Applications Taken
Loans Submitted
Loan Approvals (final approval)
Closings
The key to having a healthy loan origination business is making sure you have the right amount of flow (throughput) going through each of these 6 stages at all times. In order to manage that flow, we measure the number of Leads, Calls, Applications, etc., every week. As your coach, I keep this information in a set of spreadsheets and send you a report every week so you can see exactly how you’re doing and where you most need to focus right now.
Professional athletes (and their coaches) measure every aspect of their performance, and work constantly on improving their skills, because they realize that even minor improvements in performance can result in major improvements in income.
Successful businesses operate on the same principle. And when you hire me to coach you, you are committing yourself to a path that leads inevitably to success.
Systems to Help You Manage Your Time While You Manage Your Business
I’ve already mentioned how the measurement system helps you stay focused on maintaining the ideal rate of flow through the 6 critical stages of your origination business. You will find that these reports save you an enormous amount of time.
But I can also help you design a system (which I call the Customer Care System) for managing ALL the details of processing and closing a loan. Integrated into that system will be all the steps you would want to take to insure that every customer has a great experience, will return to you for future lending needs, and will refer family and friends to you.
Most originators try to manage their pipelines by looking globally at all their loans and then trying to prioritize which loans to work on today. When your Customer Care System is incorporated into your contact management/calendar system, it enables you to go to your daily calendar and see all the tasks that need to be completed today, no matter which customers those tasks are associated with. The result is that you spend your time doing the things that need to be done, instead of spending your time sorting through your files and trying to decide which things should be done next.
As your coach, I will also show you some time management techniques that will help you focus on your highest priorities so that, even in the midst of the chaos that often characterizes this business, you can remain confident that you are working on the things that matter most.
Who Benefits From Coaching?
· Mortgage Company Owners and Managers – when I work with owners and managers our focus is typically on the development of an integrated business strategy, and on hiring, training, and managing the right team to execute that strategy. I often provide training to team members, as well as leadership skills development for the manager/owner.
· Individual Loan Originators – when I work with individual originators, our focus tends to be on creating a personal business strategy and developing the skills necessary to make that strategy successful – including, but not limited to sales, marketing, systems development, time management and organization.
